After 37 weeks of being pregnant, our new addition to the family decided it was time to join us. I was just at the beginning of my 37th week when he decided it was time. It all started on Monday, February 15th around noon. I started not feeling all that well. I was busy working on putting the basement back together since we just had it painted and was finished over the weekend. So, I was busy getting things back into order. We moved as much as we could into the laundry and storage rooms. I would be putting things away and feel lots of pressure, so I would sit down and it would subside. I would stand up again and begin to work again and the same thing. I told Brent that I was having contractions, but we were both like 3 weeks early that is to early they must be fake labor pains. The afternoon was passing and they were hurting a little worse each time, but not totally uncontrollable pain like with Josie. I called the doctors office and he said just to head to the hospital and get checked out. So, that is what we did.
Let me just say that my goal for the weekend was to finish the nursery, pick out names, install the car seat, and pack the bags. Well, when this was going down I had none of this done yet. Good going Jennifer! So, Brent hurried and installed the car seat, I packed the bags between contractions, and we discussed names to keep my mind off of things.
We loaded up and dropped Josie off at the in-laws, then to the hospital we went. I was not in that much pain (I have a high pain tolerance, just ask Brent) and the contractions were not really regular yet. We got the hospital and the contractions were about 3 minutes apart and lasting around 1 minute long. They checked out things and said I would not be leaving with out my new family addition. Brent quickly called work to let them know he would not be into work that evening and called my work to let them know I was starting my maternity leave effective immediately.
After I was admitted around 5 PM, things changed. The contractions became very irregular. We tried lots of things to get them going. We did laps around the hallways and even taking a shower to get things going again and they did not seem to be working. When I came in I was already 90% thinned and dilated to a 3.
I was scheduled to have my last sonogram on Wednesday to see what we were looking at weight wise and such. This was actually scheduled a week early. Usually they do this at 38 weeks, but due to Josie being early we moved it up to my 37 weeks appointment, but obviously never made it there.
At about 11:30 PM, they started my epidural. The pain was not that uncontrollable, but I knew it was going to get bad soon and then I would really want it. They had some issues with the epidural. My left leg became numb very quickly, but the right leg was not even numb at all. They rotated me to my side to get the meds to work on the other side. I still could feel the contraction in my tummy. I told the nurse and the anistesologist came in and gave me a quick does of some meds which did not agree with me. Within seconds I became very sick to my stomach on the verge of throwing up and started to sweat and got really light headed. After a few minutes, I was fine. I was still feeling the contractions in my tummy though. Weird! The nurse wiggled some cords connected to my epidural line and all of a sudden I felt a cold rush. Meaning a big dose of meds. The epidural machine alarm kept going off and the anisesologist could not figure it out. But now here comes the really weird part. Now, my legs and butt were completely numb. When I say numb, I mean you could touch them and I would not feel them. I tried to wiggle my toes and no go. No feeling at all, but I still could feel the contractions in my tummy.
5 minutes after my first epidural was inserted my water broke on its won at 11:50 PM. Things still moved slow however. The nurse kept stating when the baby moves his or her head they will be here. He was just stubborn and would not move into proper location. Once he did the doctor was there within 25 minutes to deliver. It took only 3 pushes for him to come into the world. I did not do any pushing before the doctor showed up. It took one to get out the head, one for the shoulders, and one for the rest. Not to bad I thought.
Yes, this was not a 4 1/2 hour delivery like Josie, but the pain was no where close to the pain I felt with her and I had a lot less pushing this time around.
